Whether you’re prepared or not, it’s here – the holidays. Bells will be rung, halls will be decked and, most importantly, credit cards will be swiped. If your blood pressure rose after reading that, you need think about taking some time out for yourself. Fortunately, when it’s the holidays in DTLA, there are plenty of ways to just unwind and have some fun. And, the best part – you don’t have to lift a finger to figure out a game plan. What better way to feel the holiday spirit than to do some ice skating? To the delight of DTLA-ers young and old, the Pershing Square outdoor ice rink is officially open. Until January 15, you and the family can enjoy tons of activities against the backdrop of the beautiful DTLA skyline. Events include DJ nights, themed parties, and even curling lessons. For many Angelenos, it’s not the holidays in DTLA without the Pershing Square Holiday Ice rink.

L.A. Live is right around the corner from WREN’s DTLA apartments so we’re all super stoked about Holly Jolly Day. On December 17 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., The Mixing Room of the JW Marriott is transformed into a holiday wonderland. So, why all the excitement? Check out what $20 ($12 for kids) includes:

  • A life-sized gingerbread house
  • Cupcake decorating station
  • Hot chocolate and chocolate fondue

A staple of the holidays in DTLA, this Christmas Eve event doubles as a celebration of both the holiday season and diversity. More than 20 acts from L.A. and beyond will be converging on Dorothy Chandler Pavilion to share the gifts of music and dance. The L.A. County Holiday Celebration is completely free and will feature everything from ballet companies and handbells to choirs and a swing band.

The holiday boat parades are truly indicative of an L.A. way of life. Every year, DTLA-ers are encouraged to leave the house and relish the outdoors. Would you like to experience the joy of kicking off the holiday season again and again? You’re in luck! A myriad of plazas and shopping malls all over Los Angeles will be hosting grand tree lighting ceremonies. Accompanying activities vary, but typical celebrations include music, DJs, food, and Santa Claus.

From November 17 to January 7, the L.A. Zoo in Griffith Park will be filled with magnificent light displays. A seemingly endless number of lasers, 3-D projections, and LED lights, some of which are interactive, will impressively line trees and paths all over the Zoo. This is truly one of the best ways to appreciate the holidays in DTLA! In addition to the self-guided tours, there will also be train rides, water shows and, of course, animals. Ticket prices range from $10 to $15 if you purchase them online.

Reindeer Romp is an excellent choice if you have little ones to entertain. During the same period as Zoo Lights, Santa’s reindeer will be visiting the L.A. Zoo & Botanical Gardens. The whole fam can meet the reindeers, learn interesting facts, take a holiday photo, and even participate in a make-your-own-antlers craft activity. Tickets are separate from the Zoo Lights event and cost $16 to $21.
