Happy Hour Update! The Best Happy Hours in South Park LA, Summer 2018

Ah, happy hour. It’s the moment many of us dream about as we’re rapidly wrapping up the day at work. Luckily, for worked-to-the-bone DTLA-ers, the City of Angels takes this magical time pretty seriously. And, what’s more, you can find a killer happy hour in the South Park neighborhood. Last July, we detailed some of our favorite South Park happy hours; however, things in DTLA change pretty fast. So, we’ve decided it’s time for an update. If you’re looking for a spot to cut loose after work (or you just really like a good deal), here are spots you’ve got to hit!

Prank Bar (Daily, 2:40-7:02pm & 9:42-10:47)

*image from Happening in DTLA

First up is Prank Bar, locally known as the first walkup bar in DTLA. Their quirky happy hour times are designed around their lucky 7’s menu where everything, like Kobe beef sliders, vegan nachos, wings, and tacos, is just 7 bucks. Located at the corner of 11th and hope, Prank blends the indoors and the outdoors to provide patrons with access to their patio, the walk up bar, and the lookout lounge. There’s amazing food, 2 full-service bars with amazing beer and wine lists and craft cocktails…at Prank, you can’t miss.

Barcito (All night Monday, 4-7 Tues to Fri,5-7 Sat)

*image from Barcito’s Instagram

An Argentine-inspired spot on the corner of 12th & Grand (yes, right around the corner from WREN apartments in DTLA) Barcito provides shared plates in approachable, laid-back setting. Billed as both an all-day cafe and a late night bar, Barcito is a place where you can pop in for a drink or spend the entire day. The Happy Hour boasts unbelievable cocktails, each of which is just $9, and the restaurant serves amazing food at all hours of the day. If you’re in South Park, LA this spot is a must!

Preux and Proper (Daily, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.)

*Image from Preux and Proper

2017 Diners’ Choice Award winner Preux and Proper has built a reputation as a top South Park happy hour, which is great for us since it’s under a mile from WREN’s DTLA apartments. Regulars will tell you to try the frozen daiquiris and cocktails, baked mac and cheese, and shrimp and oyster po’ boy. (Our mouths are watering just thinking about it.)

Baldoria (Sunday through Friday, 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.)

*image from Baldoria

How would you like 20% off on any drink you like? That’s what the good people of Baldoria will do for you. But, for most, the real star of this happy hour is the $8 pizzas. We recommend the Yukon Gratin Pizza or the Hot Mama.

Mezcalero (Monday through Friday, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.)

*image from Mezcalero’s Instagram

Mezcalero may be considered the most chill happy hour in South Park. A friendly staff and relaxed atmosphere perfectly complement the inventive $7 cocktails. Of course, if you’re not a cocktail fan, that’s okay — they also offer $5 drafts, $3 bottles and cans, and $4 wines and wells. Start collecting the change in your couch!

The Library Bar (Monday through Friday, 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.)

*image from the Library Bar’s instagram

The Library Bar is located about a mile from our luxury apartments in South Park. In case you’re wondering, yes, this spot is an homage to libraries and bibliophiles. And, the addition of jazz music to the decor makes this a super cool South Park happy hour. Highlights include $5 select appetizers, $8 cheeseburger, $8 select cocktails, and $6 select wines and beers.

District (Daily, 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.)

*from District’s Instagram

District invites you to imbibe on their plush couches in the bar area. Every day, they serve up $6 select cocktails, wines, and craft beers, and you can choose three food items off their happy hour menu for $20. This includes items such as tamari deviled eggs, truffle potato fries, and beef and kimchi tacos. It’s all yummy.

Wolf and Crane (Monday through Friday, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.; all day Sunday)

*image from Wolf and Crane’s Instagram

Nestled in the Little Tokyo area is the cozy Wolf and Crane. The staff here is all about community. So much so that if you visit them enough, you might get a special nickname that’s displayed on a little plaque. The happy hour menu showcases $8 well cocktails, and $5 house wines and beers.

Birds and Bees (Daily, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.; all day Sunday)

*image from Birds and Bees’ Instagram

Birds and Bees is probably the most secretive happy hour in South Park in the sense that its speakeasy entrance is not easy to find. (Make sure to look for a staircase near the corner of the parking lot that leads down to an alley where clues on the ground there will lead the way.) Once you’re in, reward your efforts with $8 select cocktails.

The Love Song Bar (Monday through Friday, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.)

*from the Love Song Bar’s Yelp Page

The Love Song Bar is a dive that you’ll easily fall in love with. It’s located in the Regent Theater and boasts an old-fashioned punk rock vibe. During happy hour (a.k.a. Amazing Hour), small plates are 50 percent off, wines are $6, draft beers are $5, and select cocktails are $7. Plus, the food menu typically includes some relatively healthy options.

We certainly hope we’ve led you to a South Park happy hour that sings to you. At WREN, we’re lucky enough to have FIRST DRAFT taproom and kitchen opening up in July in our retail space, so a good time is always just downstairs.

We feel it’s important to stay on top of what DTLA-ers really care about. It’s helped us develop an incredible apartment community that’s suitable for any type of personality and lifestyle.
We’re telling you — there’s something really special going on in South Park and at WREN.

WREN Is Honored to Be Recognized in The Downtown Breakfast Club Roses & Lemon Awards

You know what they say — when you’re proud of something, share it with the world. So, we’re revealing some exciting news. The Downtown Breakfast Club just named WREN as one of the best new apartment developments in Downtown Los Angeles!

The annual Roses and Lemon Awards Ceremony was held in April, and we at WREN were thrilled to learn that our DTLA apartments were recognized as a major contributor to the orderly growth of the downtown area.

What Is the Downtown Breakfast Club?

downtown Roses CLub

The DBC has operated for nearly 40 years and is made up of Los Angeles real estate professionals. Each year, the group recognizes achievements in real estate and social service projects. Simply put, it’s about giving Rose awards to the best in DTLA. Categories include the best new residential developments (low-rise, high-rise, and affordable), best development (retail, commercial, mixed-use, and creative space), best upscale restaurant, best hotels, best bar, and innovative new places.

The Winners

This year, WREN was extremely ecstatic to receive a Rose for being the Best Low-Rise! We also want to give a shout out to some of our fellow award winners, many of which are less than a mile from us in Downtown Los Angeles:

(Oh, and if you’re wondering what the Lemon is all about, that goes to what the Downtown Breakfast Club considers as an area for improvement. This year, the Lemon went to traffic gridlock.)

A Product of Our Blood, Sweat, and Tears

We’ll never ever take our DBC award for granted! The honor is a culmination of A LOT of hard work. WREN was born back in 2013 when Mack Urban purchased several parcels of land in the up-and-coming neighborhood of South Park. Angelenos anxiously awaited the construction of the two seven-story buildings with 362 luxury apartments. By the time the project was completed in 2017, the population of South Park had exploded and WREN became an essential addition to DTLA.

But, the energy spent on erecting our two signature buildings wasn’t the only thing that led us to a Downtown Breakfast Club Rose. We also spent an immense amount of time paying attention to what DTLA-ers were looking for in a modern apartment community. And, we avoided the extraneous fluff that often overwhelms and hinders a living experience. We made sure our community represented what an LA resident would really want and need. It’s actually all a part of a bedrock philosophy that we follow every day — Thoughtful Living.

WREN Is One of a Kind

WREN Building

Alright, so you now know about our road to becoming the new best low-rise development, but you may be unfamiliar with what really sets WREN apart. Our residents seamlessly transition between all aspects of their lives. Whether you’re working, playing, entertaining, or relaxing, WREN is a perfect complement.

Outside of an incredible location, WREN boasts contemporary apartment homes that make optimal use of color and space to cultivate a luxurious yet comfortable environment. Plus, residents have access to highly-desired amenities:

Apartments DTLA Fitness Center & Yoga Room

Not to mention, we also keep DTLA-ers connected to their neighborhood and City through our informative blog.

Well, enough about us and our Downtown Breakfast Club award. How about we get to know you and what you’re looking for in an apartment community? Get in touch with WREN today!

DTLA Restaurant Update 2018: The Best New Spots Near WREN

It’s time to eat, y’all! Just when you thought the DTLA restaurant scene couldn’t get any better, a new wave of culinary masters has recently descended upon our beloved City of Angels. How do we know this? Well, it just so happens that tons of fantastic spots have opened near WREN’s new South Park apartments within the last couple of months. So, if you’re looking for a spectacular bite to eat, make sure to head on over to our neck of the woods and check these out:

Takasan Japanese Bowls

*image from LaDowntowner.com

Located in the Financial District, you’ll find Takasan Japanese Bowls with its fast and casual facade; however, don’t let that fool you — it’s a legit DTLA restaurant serving up authentic and delicious Japanese donburi (aka rice bowls). The flavors are big, the portions are perfect, and the prices are affordable. It might just end up your favorite lunch spot.

*image from Beelman’s Facebook

Many DTLA-ers argue that Beelman’s serves some of the best vegan comfort food in town. Favorites include Tachos, Wonton Mee Bites, and the Viet-nom-nom Wrap. Plus, they have a pretty great beer and cocktail list. (If you’re a fan of pickleback shots, Beelman’s might become a good friend.)

NoMad Lobby and Mezzanine

*image from the Nomad’s Instagram

Less than a mile from WREN’s new South Park apartments and located within the historic Giannini Place building is the gorgeous and luxurious NoMad Hotel. Here, you’ll find more than one must-visit DTLA restaurant operated by esteemed chef Daniel Humm:

  1. The NoMad Mezzanine is a fine dining experience featuring incredible New American cuisines such as suckling pig and foie gras with pear, black onion, and red walnuts.

The NoMad Lobby is a more casual spot with cocktails to die for, and a menu showcasing delectable dishes like a dry-aged beef burger, Chicken Milanese, and a gourmet hot dog with black truffle and celery.

The Dolly Lama

*Image from The Dolly Lama’s Instagram

This isn’t your grandfather’s ice cream shop! The Dolly Lama specializes in mind-blowing made-to-order waffles and ice cream. The 10 scrumptious sauces, nearly 30 toppings, and 8 tasty ice cream flavors are perfect accompaniments to The Dolly Lama’s traditional waffles, waffle sticks, and bubble waffles. For example, you can explore the bubble waffle with red velvet ice cream, malt balls, marshmallows, and Nutella (just a suggestion).

LiOrient Asian Bar & Lounge

*image from LiOrient’s Facebook

LiOrient Asian Bar & Lounge is a fairly new DTLA restaurant but has already made a name for itself with its delightful pork, crab, and truffle XLB (aka soup dumplings). Other yummy dishes that have also built a reputation include orange chicken and black pepper duck. The name of the game here is fast service, but it doesn’t take away from an elegant atmosphere.

South City Fried Chicken

*image from South City Fried Chicken’s Facebook

You don’t have to travel to the Southern part of the country for some heavenly fried chicken — you just have to walk a mile from WREN’s new South Park apartments! People from all over are falling in love with the deliciously tender and juicy fried chicken sandwiches at South City Fried Chicken. Most diehard regulars will agree that the Birmingham (loaded with cheddar, horseradish chimichurri, and hickory smoked onions) is the must-try at this DTLA restaurant.

*image from Ebaes Facebook

Quality sushi and ramen can be hard to come by, so we’re ecstatic that we have EBaes just a couple miles from our DTLA apartments. Just about every roll is fabulous, but the favorite is often the original ramen with coconut milk. They also have a grab and go counter so you can still have a terrific lunch or dinner if you’re running around like a madman/madwoman.

Inko Nito

*image from Inko Nito’s Instagram

As soon as you walk into Inko Nito and see the massive grill in the middle of the dining area, you know something special is about to happen. This DTLA restaurant is Korean and Japanese at its best! Various meat and fish dishes are grilled to perfection by skilled chefs. But, that’s not to say that the sushi rolls and veggies aren’t fantastic (because they are). You know what? Just try it all.

East Garden

*image from East Garden’s website

Fortunately, for the foodies at WREN, South Park and Chinatown are pretty close to each other. This means mouthwatering Chinese food is a hop, skip, and a jump away. The Hong Kong Style fare at East Garden is phenomenal and one of the best parts — they don’t skimp on the portions. Everything is awesome here, but word on the street is that no other DTLA restaurant does Singapore noodles like East Garden does.

We know it might be hard to believe that all of these culinary treasures are so close to WREN, but we promise it’s true! WREN has an amazing location in the heart of downtown LA. In addition to the sensational cuisine, we’re also near parks, shops, entertainment, cultural centers, and the hottest LA nightlife spots.

What’s also impressive about WREN is that when residents aren’t discovering a world-class city, they’re able to retreat to a community that fosters an extraordinary living experience. With two signature buildings and first-rate amenities such as an on-site restaurant, private park, two indoor/outdoor rooftop decks, pool and poolside cabana, business center,  conference room, and fully-appointed resident club lounge, we’ve built a reputation as one of the preeminent apartment communities in LA. Not to mention, all these features complement our roomy, modern, and luxurious apartment homes. We work to make DTLA-ers feel like there’s nowhere else they’d rather live, work, and play.

We’re confident that you’d feel right at home with WREN! Drop our leasing agents a line to find out why our DTLA apartments are a perfect fit for you!

El Pueblo de Los Angeles

El Pueblo de Los Angeles DTLA Arts & Culture

El Pueblo de Los Angeles is a vital contributor to the DTLA arts and culture scene. This historical monument pays tribute to the birthplace of LA. Nearly 240 years ago, immigrants of Native American, European, and African descent traveled from what is currently northern Mexico to the area we know today as Los Angeles. Every year, more than two million people visit the 44-acre park that’s inclusive of museums and other attractions related to the area’s rich and intriguing history.

FIDM Museum

The fashion industry in downtown Los Angeles rivals that of New York and other heavy hitters. For this reason, it’s no wonder that DTLA has a fantastic museum memorializing the artists who have helped shape our culture through clothing and accessory design. The FIDM Museum offers up a comprehensive and impressive display of developments in the fashion world. You’ll see everything from sketches and photography to handbags, hats, costumes, and gowns.

Grammy Museum

For many people, the lifeblood of DTLA arts and culture is music. For almost 60 years, Los Angeles has been home to the world-famous Grammy Awards. Through permanent and temporary exhibits, the Grammy Museum honors influential musicians and seeks to raise awareness about the importance of music in society. (As an added bonus for us and our residents, the Grammy Museum is located in the L.A. LIVE District which is just a few blocks from WREN’s luxury apartments in South Park.)

The Museum of Contemporary Art

The Museum of Contemporary Art DTLA

Yes, contemporary art is making another appearance on the list. We couldn’t leave you without mentioning MOCA. It’s touted as the “only artist-founded museum in Los Angeles”. Here, visitors enjoy thousands of pieces showcasing groundbreaking American and European art created after the 1940s. MOCA has three separate LA locations but we have an affinity for the Grand Avenue branch located about 1.5 miles from us.

At WREN, we’re thrilled to be in the epicenter of DTLA arts and culture. It helps us nurture an optimal apartment living experience.

When our residents aren’t out exploring all that downtown Los Angeles has to offer, they’re able to retreat to a community completely centered on them.
