SoCal Ski Season Is Here! LA’s Most Popular Day Trip Ski Destinations

Posted in Uncategorized

We know what some of you are thinking: Los Angeles is known for soaking in the sun, not chilling in the cold. We understand your suspicion but we promise – we’re telling the truth. California is a mecca of outdoor recreation and has everything from beautiful beaches to shred-worthy ski slopes.

The SoCal ski season is right around the corner! And, for DTLA-ers, it’s super easy to venture out for an awesome day of top-notch skiing; you just have to know where to go. Luckily, the powder hounds at WREN are here to share with you LA’s most popular ski destinations. Here goes!

Snow Summit

For nearly 70 years, Snow Summit has been serving Californians with a 240-acre ski area and 31 runs. It’s one of the busiest ski resorts near Los Angeles and is an ideal spot for night skiing, tubing, and ski and snowboard lessons. The conditions at Snow Summit are consistent throughout the SoCal ski season since the area is constantly maintained by a cutting-edge snowmaking system.

Mountain High

Located in the San Gabriel Mountains near Wrightwood is Mountain High. It’s one of the closest ski resorts to Los Angeles at about an hour-and-a-half drive. Mountain High includes 290 acres of skiable terrain, 59 runs, and consists of three main areas:

  • Beginner-friendly North Resort at 7,200 feet elevation
  • Alpine-like East Resort at 6,600 feet elevation
  • Extremely popular, snowboard-heavy West Resort at 7,000 feet elevation

Snow tubers can also get in on the fun at the North Pole Tubing Park, and night skiers have access to 73 acres of the park every day.

Big Bear Mountain Resort

Big Bear is the sister resort to Snow Summit. One lift ticket can be used at both mountains which makes it a favorite destination during the SoCal ski season. Big Bear features three peaks, 748 acres, 12 lifts, 24 runs, and one of the only superpipes in Southern California. Also, if you love taking in views as you ski your way down your mountains, some of Big Bear’s black diamonds are suitable for cruiser runs.

Mount Baldy Resort

The Mount Baldy Resort calls the San Gabriel Mountains home and boasts the steepest vertical of all the SoCal resorts. While people of all skill levels can enjoy a day on Mount Baldy, the challenging terrain lends itself well to more advanced skiers and snowboarders. Lifts serve 26 runs and a skiable area that spans 800 acres. A word to the wise, though – make sure to check mountain conditions before you go. The SoCal ski season for Mount Baldy is completely dependent on the weather.

Snow Valley Mountain Resort

Based in Running Springs, Snow Valley Mountain is the oldest ski resort in Southern California. It’s on the smaller side and definitely has a mom-and-pop type feel to it, but don’t let that fool you – the experience is fantastic. Thirteen lifts deliver patrons to 29 runs, and 2017 will be the first year that the Resort uses its new six-person detachable ski lift. Snow Valley is favorable to beginners and intermediates, and visitors often sing the praises of its incredible affordability and family-focused vibe.

SoCal Ski Season Opening Dates

At this point, you probably want to be on a mountain versus talking about one. So, without further ado, here is when you can expect to dust off all your snow gear:

  • Snow Summit: Nov. 17
  • Mountain High: Nov. 1
  • Bear Mountain: Nov. 17
