Beat the LA Heat Wave: Best Places to Cool Off in DTLA
Man, it’s been a real scorcher lately! It’s totally understandable if this LA heat wave has been pretty hard on you. In fact, we might venture to say that it’s been hard for everyone. After all, we’re hitting temperatures that LA hasn’t seen since 1886. (That’s 131 years if you don’t have a calculator or hate math.) And, it doesn’t look like our beloved City of Angels is going to cool down anytime soon. For this reason, you may be seeking ways to cool off in DTLA. Well, we at WREN Apartments have your back with some tips for keeping that body temp down!
A Day at the Museum
Why not get in a little culture while you’re cooling off? DTLA is home to some of the best museums in the country. And, they’re all air-conditioned!
- The Broad, which is 10 minutes from WREN, offers up 120,000 square feet of contemporary art pieces that inspire over a million visitors a year.
- The Getty Center often tops “best of” lists due to their gorgeous gardens, sculptures, and Van Gogh and Rembrandt pieces.
- The one-of-a-kind MOLAA showcases contemporary Latin American art that’s daring and engaging.
Visit the Wells Fargo Atrium

Another way to beat the LA heat wave is to take a trip to the atrium that connects the north and south towers of the Wells Fargo Center. The three-story, glass-encased court boasts beautiful sculptures and impressive landscaping. Also, the garden includes fountains and streams that emanate the soothing sound of flowing water to create a calm, peaceful space. Just find a seat, and take in the splendor.
Make Your Way to the Griffith Observatory
There are tons of things to do at the iconic Griffith Observatory. It can be a super fun way for the whole family to get out of the LA heat wave. Not only do you have your choice of checking out the observatory and planetarium, but you can also take a stroll through the exhibits or see one of the many shows that occur daily.
Check Out the California Science Center

This is another family-friendly spot with a plethora of activities to keep everyone busy. At 400,000 square feet, California Science Center is considered the largest of its kind on the West Coast. The Center includes permanent and traveling exhibits, some of which are interactive. And, if you feel like a show, there is also an IMAX theater. Or, you can watch live demonstrations. Not a bad strategy against the LA heat wave, eh?
Hit the Beach
Of course, we had to include the quintessentially Californian way to cool off in DTLA. For a good time in the warm weather, consider making the trek to these beaches:
A Malibu favorite, Zuma is great for lovers of body surfing and boogie boarding.
Dockweiler Beach in Playa del Rey
This is an excellent sandy spot for swimming, surfing, and water sports.
Rosie’s Dog Beach in Long Beach
An important one to mention because our furry friends need cooling off too!
Find a Cooling Center
The City is all about keeping its citizens healthy and safe, so several cooling centers have been set up. Here are a few that are relatively close to downtown:
- Slauson Multipurpose Center: 5306 Compton Ave
- Mount Carmel Recreation Center: 830 W. 90th St.
- Rancho Cienega Sports Complex: 5001 Rodeo Road
