5 ‘Go-To’ DTLA Bars Near WREN Apartments
Looking for a spot to sip a classy cocktail in DTLA? Well, you’re in luck, because there’s no shortage of amazing DTLA bars for you to try. But which ones should you hit, you may ask? If you were to make a list of all the bars in the Downtown Los Angeles area and visit one of those bars every weekend, you’d be bar hopping for the next thousand years – there are that many. But at WREN, we’re here to help you out and direct to the best of what DTLA has to offer. So, if you’re looking for a new ‘Go-To’ bar in DTLA – you know, one of those places that you can always trust to deliver the goods, we’ve got you covered.
The first up on our list of ‘go-to’s’ is Prank Bar, one of the newest additions to the South Park DTLA bar scene. Prank is an upscale bar just around the corner from the Staples Center that’s based around a rather unique concept – a walk up bar with immediate access to the street outside. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to hit the street carrying your drinks, but Prank’s unique layout does well to merge the indoor and outdoor spaces. A pair of retractable walls means you can walk right up to the bar, start sipping, and start perusing their amazing menu options.
Another newcomer to the DTLA bar scene, Birds & Bees provides an experience that was the norm 5 or 6 decades ago, but has since become a scarce novelty. Yes, Birds & Bees is by all accounts a bar that sits firmly within the Speakeasy category, although patrons will tell you its anything but. That’s probably because the cocktails are out of this world, and the interior spots and industrial chic aesthetic that is certainly nostalgic, but doesn’t at all speak to the dinge and drab decor typically associated with Speakeasies. But, it does have a secret entrance and it is located below ground, so ‘speak easy’ isn’t far off. Head here if you’re aiming for a classic cocktail in a warm welcome atmosphere.
While it’s not as new as our first two mentions, the Stocking Frame burst onto the DTLA bar scene a few years ago and is still making waves. The name is a nod to its location, an old garment factory – a stocking frame is a mechanical knitting machine from the 16th century. This establishment bills itself as both a bar and a refuge. Aside from the ambitious cocktail and beer menu, the restaurant side of things sports a menu that is equal parts savory pub eats and eclectic Euro-inspired small bites. The Woodfired pizzas are particularly delightful and the pork belly and octopus tacos (yes, you read that right) are certainly a stand out. Come here if you’re looking for finely crafted cocktails, uniquely delicious eats, and a mellower atmosphere.
The Upstairs Bar was originally inspired by Hollywood’s famous Les Deux Cafe and has been one of the most hip rooftop bars in the DTLA area, attracting folks who come to take in the stunning views, take a dip in the pool, and enjoy a stiff cocktail. With a ton of events that happen almost every night, The Upstairs Bar is truly a destination, with DJs, live bands, release parties, pop-up shops, and more. Everything about the Upstairs Bar, from the decor, to the atmosphere, to the drinks and food, presents a refined, upscale perspective on DTLA nightlife. They offer a myriad of classy cocktails alongside an impressive beer and wine selection, and the food is understated small plates that are crafted with amazing care. The Yellowfin Tuna TarTare is unparalleled, and the cold infusion cocktail will certainly keep you cool on those hot summer days in DTLA. Come here if you’re looking for a splurge.
